#597…”‘Whatever You Are, Be a Good One'”

Maxims & Quotes. Consider…

“Happiness is not found in the things you possess, but in what you have the courage to release.”¹

–Nathaniel Hawthorne

“You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.”¹

–Jack London

From an illustrated volume of 100 of the best inspirational quotes, discovered in a waiting room, I found 16 that I took time to write down. (84 didn’t make the cut.) Here I’ll share two, no three, of them here. It’s interesting how words, symbols made arranging “marks” that are put down in portable books, are found useful in encouraging humans to “move ahead” and “improve” their lives. A thinking person is jostled by words into believing a particular idea is, or can be, useful, or true, if applied to one’s life.

The words say so–words offered by someone who’s already walked ahead of us on the path we’re walking.

Sometimes it’s difficult to clearly demarcate differences between humans and other creatures. But this seems to be a real difference, showing how nonhumans and humans–created in the image of God–go about things differently.

Of course, maxims can be “wrong,” or little more than a general statement that is true for many, but not everyone in every situation.

¹ The (non-biblical or “abiblical”) maxims here are from Whatever You Are, Be a Good One (Chronicle Books, 2014; “lettered by Lisa Congdon; further exact quotations cited in the back pages). The 3rd quotation is the title, and said to come from Abraham Lincoln.

  1. Thanks John! Concerning “The words say so-words offered by someone who’s already walked ahead of us on the path we are walking.”
Here is one of my favorites: “This is the only way to be sure we’re in God. Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.” (1 John 2:5&6 from the Message)
Keep up the good work you are doing. Pray for Natalie and for peace in our land.

  2. Thank you for your words, and will do re the prayer requests. A further note to my email is welcome. We’re doing well.
