According to AT&T this is an excellent way to show your friends you’re about to drive and can’t respond until you arrive. This isn’t a problem for me, but it must be for some. As you holiday shop and journey by car, or foot, note the number who have a techie gizmo in their hands or against their ear. Note the number of women (or, okay, men) who can’t seem to cross the street without holding a mechanical device to their ear. (And in an airport lounge, or in the waiting area at Gate Wherever, compare the percentage of those who do with those who don’t. How is the latter minority different?)

A new world, and a brave one.

The “#X” idea is from AT&T. More info is at att.com/playit safe. Also consider att.com/stolenphone. I suppose my thinking about all this began four years ago when I was in Florida and one of my sons called from Baltimore and asked, “Dad, did you know your cell phone was stolen?” I didn’t. It happened that fast.
