“New York Times Best Seller” means exactly what? It’s got to be something good, since as 25 to 50 percent of the books shelved for sale to consumers (depending where you buy them beyond Amazon) conspicuously display those words. What does the NYT–the newspaper–have to do with it? We’re not sure, so if you wonder a bit, we encourage you to try and find out. How many books qualify? How many subcategories are there: 2, 3, or 23? Is it for each year? Is it for a week? The current year? Do win, place, or show all mean “best”?¹ Is it like Governor Huckabee–once a governor, always a governor?

Granted, the label sounds like something that’s desirable, and suggests that more than a dozen or so have consider what the author has said. Who would turn it down? Never have we heard an author complain that too many have considered his or her words.

We expect that The Blood of Three Worlds for any of several reasons will not become a New York Times Best Seller².

   (1)  The story, and its tropes, are too original and unpredictable for too many.

   (2)  It appeals to an age range too broad to traditionally categorize.

   (3)  It has unconventional format (including 3 appendices).

   (4)  It has internal pictures.

   (5)  It occurs in a low-tech (no smart phones) region of an Earth-like exoplanet.

   There are other reasons².

¹ Don’t get too carried away by all this. Knapp claims a former book, A Pillar of Pepper, won the first C. S. Lewis Gold Medal in 1983, first over 100 other books. What does that mean? And why should it matter? Who was C. S. Lewis? What connection did he have with the award (none) and why does the award disappear after a dozen years? Always ask questions and determine the best answers for yourself.
