[Gospel lite 1¹]

.

Two charismatic men appear–the first a bit earlier than the other–and they are quickly judged by the crowds who appear:

.

“It is like children sitting in the market places….John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon! [Then] the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonus man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

.

Says Jesus, acc. to Mt. 11:16-19

.

This is a morning reflection after reading Mt. 11 (NASB).

.

   Several Observations:

.

   (1)  One can’t help but notice how this reflects the current raucous political “debate.” (In the words that follow, no attempt is intended to connect Person 1 and Person 2 with “Side A” or “Side B.”)

   (2)  This is a response by one of two first century figures to the cheap overgeneralizing of public reaction they face. Label your opponents by exaggerating suspected differences. Cut them down to size.

   (3)  In other words, you’re stupid, hypocritical, and inconsistent.

   (4)  And one of you hangs around with (assumed to be) corrupt government officials, and bad people (sinners).

   (5)  You’re guilty by accusation by those of us who know better.

   (6)  Still, we (the accusers) have taken time to come and listen.

   (7)  Says Jesus, the speaker: “Yet wisdom (understanding²) is vindicated by her³ deeds (actions that accompany Me)”

   (8)  The “deeds” were healings and other miracles that many in the crowd had observed–or experienced. [mentioned earlier in the text but not cited here]

³ “her“: Note the feminine form of that “wisdom” is packaged in (at least in the translation packaged here).
