   What is an “app” ?

.

And why is there almost as many apps as there are people on Earth?

This info comes from the July 11, 2018 Associated Press via Michael Liedtke (acc. to the Scranton Times-Trib.) And a bit from Wikipedia and our musing.

According to the Assoc. Press there’s been (not surprising to most of us) an explosion in the creating of apps for the Internet. But the extent is staggering. Just one or two details here: (1) Apple, Google, and Microsoft together now “offer  roughly 7 billion apps.” If the world population (acc. to several sources) is presently 7.6 billion (last time I thought about this it was merely 7 billion) that means we are approaching 1 app per person on Earth. Add to this (acc. to AP) Apple has “now sold nearly 1 billion iPhones.”

   (2) This past decade has ushered in an “app tsunami…[that has] spawned new economic opportunities” that have never been considered before.
