This group may come as a surprise to you, but the SDBs  existed as a serious church choice a couple of hundred years earlier than the SDAs.

The issue here is when is the real Sabbath Day — Saturday¹ or Sunday? And does this matter? A quick response to this and why it matters. (1) Catholics have needled Protestants about “Following the Bible only, and not tradition,” when they regularly worship on Sunday which is nowhere mentioned in Bible. In fact, for years the first Christians worshiped on “Saturday,” following Christ’s example. In the 4th century (AD 364) the Catholic church “changed” the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday and, in fact, even punished Christians who followed the old Jewish, and Biblical, custom. And the idea of “rest” as a key part of the day was minimized or forgotten altogether.

The Seventh Day Baptists, and others, felt, and still feel, that Sabbath rest and worship was so important that God even put it in the 10 commandments. And to almost every Christian person that honors the Biblical Sabbath, it is never to be saved, or to earn, salvation, but to obey God’s (and Jesus’) commands,

There’s a big ongoing argument about this as you would expect, and that’s not our purpose here. What we encourage to do is think about this and give you a source you’ve probably never heard of:  Don A. Sanford, A CHOOSING PEOPLE: The History of the Seventh Day Baptists Second Edition, Revised and Updated (Mercer University Press, Macon, Georga, 2013). And you can certainly find interesting items on the Internet. And you might want to review the previous post here.

This book that we recommend is actually, in spite of hundreds of footnotes, is a very interesting introduction of the history of Protestantism.

¹ “Saturday” is actually an approximation of the actual Biblical Sabbath which begins at sundown Friday night and continues until sundown Saturday night.
