The aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis has been held out as an example to explain the delicacy of “fine-tuning,” which is being increasingly put forward as an argument for the necessity of intelligent design to explain the universe.

This… “United States Navy aircraft carrier is 1,092 feet long. A self-contained city, it has a displacement of 100,000 tons when filly loaded. If the USS John C. Stennis were as fine-tuned as the universe, adding or subtracting a billionth of a trillionth of the mass of an electron from the total mass of the aircraft carrier would make it uninhabitable.”¹

Fine-tuning is just that. Many dozens of materials and events must be “just so” or human life, or any kind of life, would not be possible on our planet.

Explore “fine-tuning.” The 3 Bears, “just so” soup for Goldilocks has captured the imagination of many modern scientists investigating origins.
