Yes, this post has been spawned by the American Presidential election mess…

.

   It’s gotten ugly enough

to cause a lot of folks

   to talk nasty and

         start destroying

   things.

.

But this isn’t America’s first experience with this…

To anyone familiar with American history, this sort of thing–in one form or another–has happened before. And we’ve even talked about it¹.

.

We’ll remind our readers again of the detailed “recycling” of Western (not just American) history from AD 1435 to the “present” (then 1997 when the book was written 19 years ago) over and over again following the same 4-stage 80- to 100-year cycles–the last one, a game-changing crisis. The name of the book (and cycle we’re in) is The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy written by the historians William Strauss and Neil Howe. We highly recommend it for perspective. In short, the 4th cycle is pretty destructive and lots of things get rearranged in how we think, how we react, what we end up with, and what will come next–in a new form, of course.

“How will we deal with this present crisis?” Neil Howe was recently asked (Sorry, I don’t have the exact date).

He vaguely responded, still holding his cards, “We will deal with it because there is no other choice.”

It’s always assumed that we’ll survive and “roll around” to Stage 1.

Two big things are a bit different this time around, however:

   (1)  We know much more now about how to totally destroy each other.

   (2)  News–pictures and words–now travel everywhere at the speed of light.

   Buckle up.
