First, I am not an American veteran though when I was of  “that age” I was in the Peace Corps in West Africa until illness forced me back to a hospital in the United States.

I do, however, regularly frequent the local VFW hall for an early breakfast since it is open to the public and friends go there. The service, cleanliness, and camaraderie are excellent. To enter the restaurant one passes through a narrow corridor where off to one side is a small table with an empty chair to help customers remember those who died in military service or are still missing in action (MIA). Pictures and plaques above the table commemorate soldiers who died.

On the opposite wall is the framed set of rules that apply to the post (on the wall) that I began this post (now on your computer) with. Here is the entire set again, keeping capitalization and punctuation the same, but not duplicating the specially designed handwritten set of local regulations. I share it because it provides a snapshot of how our community sees what matters.

It doesn’t quite follow what Washington might offer if  asked for official guidance on what to put on the wall. If such guidance were available and provided, it simply it simply would be found unnecessary.

[We wrote this on Veteran’s Day, though it is published much later at Thanksgiving time. We’re thankful for the many courageous men and women from our area who risked everything to serve our country.]
