   The Answer:

.

Gerald R. Ford

        1973 – 1977

.

   We’ll do this quickly:

President Richard Nixon’s presidency was marred by scandal. First, his Vice President Spiro Agnew (with aspirations of running for President in 1976 – as “Spiro of ’76″) was found guilty of scandal for things that happened when he was Governor of Maryland. He resigned (with a later a pardon) rather than go to prison.

Gerald Ford, Minority Leader of the U. S. House of Representatives (and from Michigan’s 5th House District), was appointed by Nixon and overwhelmingly approved by the House and Senate as the new Vice President.

Nixon, with troubles of his own, was embroiled in the Watergate Scandal at the time. Ford was considered a “safe” VP replacement.

When Nixon resigned in disgrace, Ford became the 38th President of the United States.

   Two addenda here:

   (1)  Yes, he lived that long.

   (2)  Gerald R. Ford, Jr., who was adopted, was born as “Leslie Lynch King, Jr.”

   And one more…

   (3)  Please excuse this trivial connection: The 3rd man to be elected to Michigan’s 5th House District was Paul B. Henry. Paul and I (from the same college, Wheaton ’63) were friends, serving the Peace Corps (Liberia ’63), and were together in Monrovia when JFK was assassinated.
