Reading and making notes on Matthew.

As I “bundle” these to keep, let me share my thinking that occurs very early in the morning at Panara, Starbucks, Mimi’s, the Rendezvous, Chic-fil-A, or the Love Bug Bagelry. (It’s amazing how quiet some of these places can be so early…)

   What’s this?

A short–occasional–series of notes I made for myself on my Kindle, showing one new way to do a kind of “regular Bible reading” on a modern device.

.

Mt. 8:11   “…many shall come from the east and the west, and recline at the table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven¹.”

   ¹Salvation is for all.

.

Mt. 8:20   [Jesus said] “Follow Me; and allow the dead¹ to bury their own dead.”

   ¹Metaphor precedes literal here.

.

Mt. 8:32   [Demons had been cast into swine that drowned themselves]  “…the whole city…entreated Him to depart from their region¹.”

¹Regardless of the miracles done, Jesus had disrupted the status quo, so they asked Him to go away.

.

Mt. 9:9   “Jesus…saw a man called Matthew¹sitting in the tax office; and He said to him, ‘Follow Me!” And he rose, and followed Him”

¹Something about Jesus immediately signaled to this, presumably orderly, systematic man that instant action was required. Compare to the rich young (and “good”) man who came to Jesus and when Jesus said, ‘Follow me,” he turned away–sad.

.

Mt. 9:18-26   [Regarding a synagogue leader whose daughter had died who sought Jesus' help.]  “And when Jesus came to the official’s house…He began to say [to the mourners] ‘Depart; for the girl has not died, but is asleep.’ And they began laughing at Him¹.”

¹Compare the attitude of the “mourners” with that of the synagogue official. If the official acted as he did mainly because he was desperate, then note a “good side” of the presence of “pain” or “evil.

.

Mt. 9:27-31   [Jesus heals the eyes of two blind men.]  “And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, ‘See here, let no one know about this! But they went out, and spread the news about Him in all that land¹.”

   ¹The disobedient witnesses!

.

Mt. 10:4   [A list of the 12 disciples, 'pairing' them]  “Simon¹ the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot.”

¹Note that the zealot is paired with the traitor.
