For the past 3 months I’ve been reading and rereading the Gospel of Matthew.

.

Reading and making notes.

on my Kindle.

.

As I “bundle” these to keep, let me share my thinking that occurs very early in the morning at Panara, Starbucks, Mimi’s, the Rendezvous, Chic-fil-A, or the Love Bug Bagelry. (It’s amazing how quiet some of these places can be so early…)

The part in quotes is from the Bible. The part in blue is my unvarnished note. Any part in parentheses is a later addition. There’s no logical pattern here; I’m just following the text, noting what I feel, skipping over some big things.

.

.Mt. 4:12    “When he [Jesus] heard¹ that John [the Baptist] had been taken ……………….. into custody, He withdrew into Galilee;…”

¹Implies Jesus doesn’t know.   (What other limitations did Jesus have on Earth?)

Mt. 6:16     “[Jesus speaking] And when you fast¹, do not put on a gloomy ………………… face as the hypocrites do…”

¹Assumed that you will fast..

Mt. 6:26     [Jesus speaking] “Look at the birds of the air…your ………………….heavenly Father feeds¹ them.”

¹Even the carnivores..(I assume hawks weren’t eating seeds.)

Mt. 6:27     [Jesus speaking]  “Which of you can add a single cubit¹ to ………………… his life’s span.”

¹Note: “Cubit,” a practical unit for measuring length, is used here to measure lifespan.

Mt. 7:6        [Jesus speaking] “Do not give what is holy to dogs¹…”

¹Strongly implies a basic difference between animals and people..

Mt. 7:11       [Jesus speaking]  “If you then, being evil¹, know how to give ……………….. good gifts to your children…”

¹Jesus recognizes human nature..

Mt. 8:4         [Jesus speaking]  [A leper has been cleansed.] “…go, show ……………….. yourself  to the priest…”

¹Follow the Law, please!  (A clear application of OT Law, centuries old)

These are examples of things that come to mind when one focuses on the Word of God. Nothing earthshaking, but sometimes a fresh insight to a text read many times. Many high-lighted passages (in four possible colors) I’ve passed by and aren’t shown here. Also of note: If a Kindle breaks (I had one that did) or is lost or stolen, a Kindle replacement can bring back all your old high-lighting and note-taking! I find a Kindle a fine tool for certain kinds of study and meditation.
