One literary device that gets a reader started is the opening hook. The same is true with telling a story about your life.

When Carlo¹ the bug man came to spray five years ago, he made an informal announcement that has intrigued and haunted me ever since. Because of this, I have pestered him with question after question over the years.

.

It started off:

“This is the best year of my life because my wife and I are…

…going to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and I’m going to be eligible to for Medicare.”

.

Think about that for dozen seconds.

Consider the numbers: For example, Medicare begins at 65. Before Carlo (with a NYC Italian background) told me this, he said that he and his wife who loves to cook, for a long while once a week, through their church, prepared and served food to the poor, often at their own expense. He’s always seemed to be an interesting, caring, and reliable person, with a great sense of humor, as well as one who can nail insects.

His fifth visit just occurred a couple of days ago. He has 6 children by the same wife, and a passel of grandkids, and at 59 had a great-grandchild, now 11 as he approaches 70.

And, it seems, his is a strong family that holds together and seems to enjoy each other’s company. The stories he can tell is worth the cost of erasing a few bugs now and then.
